Freestanding mailbox systems. Briefly explained.

What is a free-standing mailbox system?

A free-standing mailbox system is a mail receiving system that stands on its own foundation as a pedestal or with a support system and can be positioned independently of walls. This type of installation is often used outdoors, for example in front of the front door or on the lawn next to the path, but can also be a good solution for the foyer. Freestanding systems are ideal for apartment blocks, office buildings and commercial properties.

  • Flexibility – can be set up independently of building structures
  • Customised design – for example with its own rain protection for users or additional functions such as door opener, access control, etc.
  • Space-saving – ideal for properties with little free wall space in the entrance area
  • Simple installation – no changes to the building required

Durable, weatherproof materials are particularly important for outdoor installation. KNOBLOCH uses here:

  • Stainless steel – durable, modern and rust-resistant
  • Aluminium – lightweight and corrosion-resistant
  • Powder-coated sheet steel – versatile in colour design and robust. KNOBLOCH uses a high-quality passivation (galvanisation) for sheet steel for reasons of corrosion resistance
  • Plastic – lightweight, corrosion-resistant and cost-effective, but less resilient than the other materials, both mechanically and to weathering. KNOBLOCH therefore uses plastic in mailbox systems almost exclusively for nameplates

KNOBLOCH letterbox systems have an excellent price/performance ratio because the compartments are used as standardised basic components in a large number of different designs and are therefore produced in comparatively large quantities. However, this does not mean a limitation, quite the opposite. They can be customised to your personal requirements:

  • Size and orientation of the compartments
  • Number and arrangement of compartments
  • Colour of the compartments and colour of the flaps
  • Type of flaps (from simple to noise-reduced to flat design)
  • Additional functions: Integration of bell systems and parcel lockers as well as functional boxes with (almost) any content, from door openers for wheelchair users to access controls
  • Design: Modern, classic or according to special architectural requirements

Tip: Use our online configurator to plan your perfect letterbox system conveniently and at your own pace. You will then receive a free quote and personalised advice from us.

Installation is carried out either by screwing on (with heavy-duty dowels) or by setting the support frame in concrete.

  • Screwing on is possible indoors as well as in front of the front door and in the meadow (with its own concrete foundation)
  • Setting in concrete requires a separate concrete foundation for the system, which is constructed in three steps: Pour foundation to half thickness, erect and align support frame with base plates, pour top half of foundation. The additional stability of this type of installation pays off, especially with large systems and in heavily frequented areas

KNOBLOCH always supplies mailbox systems with a link to detailed installation instructions, which can be conveniently accessed via QR code. However, from a certain size of system (guideline: if several people are needed for installation), it makes sense to have the installation carried out by specialists to ensure stability and safety. KNOBLOCH itself offers an installation service – just ask us.

Yes, high-quality systems offer protection against theft and vandalism. The key points are:

  • Locking systems: Robust locks and cylinder locks.
  • Material strength: Resistant constructions that make it difficult to break open.
  • Weather protection: Seals and canopies protect the post from rain and snow.

Of course, we can only speak for KNOBLOCH at this point – and here the answer is a resounding yes. This applies not only to the materials used:

  • Corrosion protection through stainless steel, anodised aluminium and galvanised, powder-coated sheet steel
  • UV resistance: we only use colours and surface treatments that will not fade over decades
  • Rain protection: seals and special constructions such as rain edges prevent water from penetrating the compartments

Primarily for multi-party houses, especially in new builds or existing buildings with a lack of free wall space in the foyer. The exception to the rule is KNOBLOCH’s KNOBOX with parcel compartment: it is designed as a pedestal (i.e. free-standing) and is perfect for detached or semi-detached houses.

  • Companies – office complexes and business premises
  • Residential complexes – as a centralised solution for receiving residents’ mail
  • Public institutions such as hospitals, schools and public authorities – because a free-standing system is hard to miss and can therefore also be found quickly by occasional visitors or deliverers

The European standard DIN EN 13724 specifies the requirements for size, weather protection and safety. The key points:

  • Size of the insertion slots – so that magazines and large letters can also be handed over uncrumpled
  • Accessibility – also for people of small stature, possibly for wheelchair users
  • Protection against unauthorised access and vandalism

For KNOBLOCH systems, the necessary or sensible maintenance is limited to a few points:

  • Regular cleaning – with a soft cloth and mild detergent
  • Polishes – there are special care products for stainless steel and aluminium that can be used a few times a year
  • Function check – is recommended for locks and seals at longer intervals

The costs depend on size, material and equipment:

  • Small systems: From approx. 150-300 euros
  • Medium-sized systems: Between 500-1,500 euros
  • Large, customised systems: 2,000 euros and more

KNOBLOCH relies on a modular system with standardised letterbox compartments. This enables customised solutions for different budgets – always with high quality standards and a long service life.
