Door side mailbox systems are particularly popular in residential buildings. Some of their main advantages: high security, no noise pollution, no entry into the building by delivery staff and built-in thermal insulation. They are also ideal for combining with doorbell panels and communication systems.

A door side panel mailbox system is a mail receiving solution integrated directly next to or within the side panel of an entrance door. This means the mailbox becomes part of the door frame or adjacent glass element, seamlessly blending with the entrance area. This type of installation is well suited for both apartment buildings and commercial properties.

Door side panel systems have an exterior-facing front, which requires robust, weather-resistant materials. KNOBLOCH primarily uses stainless steel:

  • Stainless steel: Durable, modern and rust-resistant.

  • Aluminium: Lightweight and corrosion-resistant.

  • Powder-coated sheet steel: Versatile in colour options and robust. KNOBLOCH applies high-quality passivation (galvanisation) to sheet steel to enhance corrosion resistance.

  • Plastic: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant and cost-effective, but less durable mechanically and against weathering. KNOBLOCH therefore uses plastic almost exclusively for nameplates in mailbox systems.

Premium materials for mailbox systems

KNOBLOCH mailbox systems offer an excellent price/performance ratio because the compartments are used as standardised basic components in a wide variety of designs and are therefore produced in comparatively large quantities. However, this does not mean limitation but quite the opposite. They can be customised to your personal requirements:

  • Size of the flaps and compartments

  • Number and arrangement of compartments

  • Colour of the compartments and flaps

  • Type of flaps (ranging from simple to noise-damped to flat design)

  • Additional functions: integration of bell systems and parcel lockers as well as functional boxes with (almost) any content, from door openers for wheelchair users to access controls

  • Design: modern, classic, or tailored to special architectural requirements

Mailbox system configurator

This type of installation places the highest demands, so close coordination between the door manufacturer and the installation company is essential. The basic steps are:

  • Determine the glass dimensions and front panel dimensions, which is a critical step that should always be carried out by a specialist (window manufacturer).

  • Insert the front panel into the door profile, including securing it with glazing beads. Special care must be taken with thermally insulated façades to avoid thermal bridges.

  • Install the system by hanging the mailbox unit, which is attached to the front panel, securing it with locking plates and finally screwing it in place.

KNOBLOCH always supplies mailbox systems with a link to detailed installation instructions, conveniently accessible via QR code, which should be thoroughly read by you as the customer. However, installing door side panel systems yourself should only be done in exceptional cases, partly because subsequent corrections with additional dowels or plaster are difficult.

Yes, high-quality systems offer protection against theft and vandalism, and the door side panel systems from KNOBLOCH even meet protection class RC2, meaning they are as resistant as a solid front door. The key points are:

  • Integration into the door environment, which simplifies the implementation of a standardised security concept, such as with webcams

  • Locking systems with robust locks

  • Material strength, featuring resistant constructions that make break-ins difficult

  • Weather protection, with seals and rain edges that protect the mail from rain and snow

Secure Mailbox systems

Of course, we can only speak for KNOBLOCH at this point – and here the answer is a resounding yes. This applies not only to the materials used:

  • Corrosion protection through stainless steel, anodised aluminium and galvanised, powder-coated sheet steel
  • UV resistance: we only use colours and surface treatments that will not fade over decades
  • Rain protection: special designs and seals prevent water from penetrating the compartments
  • Detached and semi-detached houses: with (strong) visual enhancement of the house entrance, if required with extended functionality (doorbells, communication system)
    Apartment blocks: centralised mail reception for several parties in a shared entrance area; doorbells and communication systems are almost standard here
    Commercial properties: professional appearance and convenient access for customers and suppliers
    Public institutions: schools, administrations or clinics with a prestigious entrance area and high security requirements

The European standard DIN EN 13724 specifies requirements for size, weather protection, and security. The key points include:

  • Size of the insertion slots, ensuring magazines and large letters can be delivered without being crumpled

  • Accessibility, including for people of small stature and potentially wheelchair users

  • Protection against unauthorised access and vandalism

For KNOBLOCH systems, necessary or recommended maintenance is limited to a few key points:

  • Regular cleaning with a soft cloth and mild detergent

  • Polishing using special care products for stainless steel and aluminium, applied a few times a year

  • Function checks for locks and seals, recommended at longer intervals

The cost of a door side mailbox system depends on the material, size, and features:

  • Small systems: from approximately 150 to 300 euros

  • Medium-sized systems: between 500 and 1,500 euros

  • Large, customised systems: 2,000 euros and above
