Surface-mounted
Mailbox systems

Surface-mounted mailbox systems for apartment blocks are extremely versatile in this form. Installation is comparatively simple because all that is required on site is a flat wall surface of the appropriate size – a fact that is particularly appreciated by building renovators. The foyer is the preferred installation location. For installation on external walls, we offer appropriate weather protection such as rain guards.

Surface-mounted mailbox systems. Briefly explained.

What is a surface-mounted mailbox system?

A surface-mounted mailbox system is a mail receiving system that is attached directly to the wall or façade. Instead of being recessed into the wall, the system is mounted on a flat surface. This design is quick to install and is suitable for numerous building types.

  • Simple installation – it is attached to an existing wall, which only needs to be checked for load-bearing capacity
  • Flexibility – the position can be chosen as desired, for example in the entrance area or inside in the corridor
  • Less construction work – no major alterations or interventions in the building structure are required
  • Design options – not only the colour and design of the visible mailbox front can be adapted to the style of the building, but also the cladding

Surface-mounted mailbox systems are usually installed indoors; weather resistance is not as important here. However, durable, robust materials with efficient corrosion protection are also a must here, as the system should still look good even after many years of use. KNOBLOCH uses the following materials:

  • Stainless steel – rust-resistant, elegant and hard-wearing
  • Aluminium – lightweight, corrosion-resistant and ideal for modern designs
  • Powder-coated sheet steel – provides reliable protection against the weather thanks to galvanisation and high-quality paintwork
  • Plastic – Suitable for indoor areas or as a more cost-effective alternative, but less resistant to heavy use. KNOBLOCH therefore uses plastic in letterbox systems almost exclusively for nameplates

KNOBLOCH letterbox systems have an excellent price/performance ratio because the compartments are used as standardised basic components in a large number of different designs and are therefore produced in comparatively large quantities. However, this does not mean a limitation, quite the opposite. They can be customised to your personal requirements:

  • Size and orientation of the compartments (horizontal or vertical)
  • Number and arrangement of compartments
  • Colour of the compartments and colour of the flaps
  • Type of flaps (from simple to noise-reduced to flat design)
  • Additional functions: Integration of bell systems and parcel lockers as well as functional boxes with (almost) any content, from door openers for wheelchair users to access controls
  • Design: Modern, classic or according to special architectural requirements

Installation is carried out directly on the wall or facade and is similar to hanging a large picture or a kitchen wall unit:

  • Preparation – determine position, mark drill holes. KNOBLOCH mailbox systems are always supplied with a drilling template, which greatly simplifies this step.
  • Fastening – Drill holes, insert dowels of suitable size, fasten letterbox to the wall with screws
  • Fine adjustment – check alignment and correct if necessary. Inaccurately drilled holes with screws that are tightened too tightly can cause the system to warp, which is usually first noticeable in the gaps between the compartment doors.

KNOBLOCH always supplies mailbox systems with a link to detailed installation instructions, which can be conveniently accessed via QR code. However, from a certain size of system (guideline: if several people are needed for installation), it makes sense to have the installation carried out by specialists to ensure stability and safety.

KNOBLOCH itself offers an installation service – just ask us.

In principle, surface-mounted mailbox systems offer more points of attack than their flush-mounted counterparts, which in turn are protected on the sides by the brickwork. However, the differences are not too great – at least with KNOBLOCH systems:

  • Robust locks protect against unauthorised access
  • Durable, strong materials make break-ins and vandalism more difficult

Surface-mounted systems are used almost exclusively in closed rooms, which is why protection from wind and weather plays a less important role here. However, this does not prevent KNOBLOCH from using the same high-quality materials here as for other types of installation. The most important points:

  • Material quality – stainless steel, anodised aluminium or galvanised and powder-coated sheet steel protect against rust
  • UV-resistant colours – no fading or peeling of the coating, even after several years
  • Private households – for house entrances, garages or side entrances as well as for the home office or when children want to take care of their own mail
  • Residential complexes – for apartment blocks where several letterboxes are needed next to each other
  • Commercial properties – for offices and business premises that require a visually appealing and functional solution
  • Public institutions – for schools, authorities, hospitals and other buildings with high public traffic
  • The European standard for letterboxes DIN EN 13724 specifies the requirements for size, weather protection and security. The key points:
  • Size of the insertion slots – so that even large-format items can be inserted without kinking
  • Accessibility – the letterboxes must be at a height that is suitable for all user groups
  • Vandalism and theft protection – burglar-proof locks and sturdy materials
  • With the high-quality materials used by KNOBLOCH, the maintenance effort is limited. We recommend:
  • Regular cleaning – wipe with a soft cloth and mild detergent to remove dirt and dust
  • Stainless steel or aluminium care product – apply once or twice a year if necessary to maintain the shine
  • Functional check – locks and seals should be checked at longer intervals to ensure they are working properly
  • Small systems: From approx. 150-300 euros

  • Medium-sized systems: Between 500-1,500 euros

  • Large, customised systems: 2,000 euros and more

KNOBLOCH relies on a modular system with standardised mailbox compartments. This enables customised solutions for different budgets – always with high quality standards and a long service life.
