Wall Union
Letterbox System

A lifespan measured in decades as well as solid elegance, convenience and high security against vandalism (protection class equivalent to RC2, the same value as for a solid front door) speak in favour of a through-the-wall mailbox system. It also makes a perfect impression at the property boundary (and can be combined with a doorbell plus communication system, not just there).

Other plus points are good weather protection, hardly any points of attack for vandalism – and the fact that deliverers do not have to enter the house or property. The installation requirements are similar to those for flush-mounted systems.

Wall-union mailbox systems. Briefly explained.

What is a through-the-wall mailbox system?

A through-the-wall mailbox system is a mail receiving system that passes through a wall. Mail is posted on one side (from the outside of the property boundary or house wall), while items are removed from the other side (inside the property or house). This solution is therefore ideal for property walls, gate pillars or house walls.

  • Convenient delivery – deliverers do not have to enter the property or house, ringing the doorbell is unnecessary
  • Convenient mail collection – you do not have to leave your property or house to access your mail
  • Security – the system is well protected against tampering thanks to the fixed anchoring in the wall
  • Space-saving – similar to flush-mounted installation, the system disappears into the wall

Through-the-wall mailbox systems always have at least one front on the outside of a wall, which is why robust, weather-resistant materials are required. KNOBLOCH uses stainless steel here:

  • Stainless steel – durable, modern and rust-resistant
  • Aluminium – lightweight and corrosion-resistant
  • Powder-coated sheet steel – versatile in colour design and robust. KNOBLOCH uses a high-quality passivation (galvanisation) for sheet steel for reasons of corrosion resistance
  • Plastic – lightweight, corrosion-resistant and cost-effective, but less resilient than the other materials, both mechanically and to weathering. KNOBLOCH therefore uses plastic in mailbox systems almost exclusively for inexpensive nameplates

KNOBLOCH mailbox systems have an excellent price/performance ratio because the compartments are used as standardised basic components in a large number of different designs and are therefore produced in comparatively large quantities. However, this does not mean a limitation, quite the opposite. They can be customised to your personal requirements:

  • Size of the flaps and compartments
  • Number of compartments
  • Colour of the compartments and colour of the flaps
  • Type of flaps (from simple to noise-damped to flat design)
  • Additional functions: Integration of bell systems with communication unit and function boxes with (almost) any content, from door openers for wheelchair users to access controls
  • Design: Modern, classic or according to special architectural requirements

Installation in an existing or newly constructed wall with a corresponding opening usually follows these steps:

  • Unscrew the front panel, slide the boxes into the wall opening and cover with a waterproof bitumen sheet at least on the top, but preferably on all sides
  • Fix the system with construction foam (without swelling effect!)
  • Plaster the gaps between the masonry and boxes
  • For the front panel, level out any unevenness in the wall (especially with natural stone) with plaster
  • For models with end profiles, ensure that the rubber seals are seated correctly; for models with a factory-fitted seal on the front panel, check for any gaps to the wall

KNOBLOCH always supplies mailbox systems with a link to detailed installation instructions, which can be conveniently accessed via QR code. However, from a certain size of system (guideline: if several people are needed for installation), it makes sense to have the installation carried out by specialists to ensure stability and safety.

KNOBLOCH itself offers an installation service – just ask us.

Yes, high-quality through-the-wall systems are extremely secure, as they are protected on all sides directly by the masonry or façade and only the front panel with the flaps is exposed to possible attacks. KNOBLOCH systems also offer

  • Robust locking systems
  • Strong materials that make breaking open and vandalism difficult

Of course, we can only speak for KNOBLOCH at this point – and here the answer is a resounding yes. This applies not only to the materials used:

  • Material quality – stainless steel, anodised aluminium or galvanised and powder-coated sheet steel protect against rust
  • UV-resistant colours – no fading or peeling of the coating, even after several years
  • Seals, rain edges and canopies – special designs and rubber seals prevent rainwater from penetrating the compartments
  • Private homes – ideal for detached houses and apartment blocks with a wall at the edge of the street or in the front garden
  • Commercial and office buildings – flush-mounted systems blend discreetly into façades and look professional
  • Public institutions – schools, authorities and hospitals benefit from a clear, flush-mounted solution

The European standard DIN EN 13724 specifies the requirements for size, weather protection and safety. The key points:

  • Size of the insertion slots – So that even large-format items can be inserted without kinking.
  • Accessibility – The letterboxes must be at a height that is suitable for all user groups.
  • Vandalism and theft protection – burglar-proof locks and sturdy materials

With the high-quality materials used by KNOBLOCH, the maintenance effort is limited. We recommend:

  • Regular cleaning – wipe with a soft cloth and mild detergent to remove dirt and dust
  • Stainless steel or aluminium care product – apply once or twice a year if necessary to maintain the shine
  • Functional check – locks and seals should be checked at longer intervals to ensure they are working properly

The price range for wall mailbox systems varies depending on the material, size and features:

  • Small systems: From approx. 150-300 euros
  • Medium-sized systems: Between 500-1,500 euros
  • Large, customised systems: 2,000 euros and more

As with all KNOBLOCH products, you also get excellent value for money with flush-mounted mailbox systems. Thanks to standardised basic modules that can be flexibly combined, you benefit from an individual, durable and visually appealing solution.
