We generally use brushed V2A for stainless steel products because this type of steel offers sufficient corrosion protection for most applications. V4A stainless steel is recommended if the mailbox system is located in maritime areas, regions with high industrial pollution, or areas with heavy air traffic, as it is then continuously exposed to higher humidity, salty air, and increased emissions – three factors that significantly increase the risk of corrosion.
Mirror-polished stainless steel creates a special highlight in the entrance area. As standard, we use mirror-polished V2A stainless steel. Mirror polishing is also available for V4A stainless steel upon request.
At KNOBLOCH, the technical term ‘galvanised sheet steel’ generally refers to sheet steel with a zinc-magnesium alloy coating on both sides. The alloy, applied using the hot-dip process, contains up to eight percent magnesium and aluminium in addition to zinc. The magnesium content ensures a self-regenerating effect, which especially protects cut edges and minimises paint infiltration. The chosen chemical composition of the coating also contributes to increased corrosion resistance.
Aluminium offers increased corrosion protection against environmental influences compared to galvanised sheet steel. Even at room temperature, this light metal quickly reacts with air and water at cut edges to form aluminium oxide, which creates a thin layer impermeable to air and water (passivation), thereby protecting against corrosion. We either powder-coat or anodise aluminium. Some manufacturing processes, such as engraving, may require the use of aluminium, as may certain modules.
Powder coating is always preceded by pre-treatment. Here, iron phosphating (sheet steel) or chrome-free passivation (aluminium) is applied in addition to the existing corrosion protection of the material. This makes these materials even more resistant to oxidation. After degreasing and applying a primer, the actual powder coating (plastic coating) is applied, which not only provides the desired colour, but also acts as further corrosion protection.
In powder coating, the parts are painted manually after pre-treatment. The process begins with the application of electrostatically charged polyester powder by hand spray gun at a thickness of 70 to 100 micrometres to the raw parts, which we then bake at 160 to 200° Celsius. The result is a continuous, weatherproof and thermostable surface.
In combination with high-precision control technology, this type of surface treatment is not only the most economical, but also the most environmentally friendly option. It uses pollutant-free solvents, allows the recovery and recycling of unused powder, has efficiency levels in the region of 99% and is also characterised by short colour change times.
We use colours from the RAL palette as standard. We can also paint colours from other standards such as British Standard (BS), the Natural Colour System (NCS) and effect colours such as textured paints and pearl effect paints without any problems (usually for a small surcharge). If absolute colour consistency with existing components on site is required, the colour used on site must be used, as deviations can occur even with different batches from the same supplier. In these cases, it is preferable for the customer to provide the colour powder, and we will support them with colour samples for comparison on site.

As standard, we offer our polyester coatings in silk gloss (SG) or matt (MA) quality as well as with smooth (GA) and fine structure (FS) surface textures. The corresponding gloss levels (at a gloss angle of 60°, with measuring geometry according to EN ISO 2813) are
In addition to our standard colours, we also offer the option of RAL colours of your choice for a small additional charge. This includes all colours from the standard RAL Classic range, with a smooth surface texture (GA) and a satin gloss (SG) quality.
This term refers to all colours that are not included in the RAL Classic range.
Tipp!
Our recommendation for protection against graffiti! This is not an additional coating, but an additional component incorporated into the polyester paint that makes it easier to wash off and remove spray paint.
You have probably heard this from us before: the entrance to a house is the calling card of its residents or owners. Should it be unobtrusively functional, timelessly elegant, confidently dignified – or, with a touch of modesty, a little extravagant, for example in architectural bronze, with mirror polish, chrome effects, brass or rust look?
We collaborate with specialists in the surface finishing sector to achieve this. Our partners include the companies Rimex and Enviral. We can offer all our base materials (stainless steel, aluminium, galvanised sheet steel) with a surface finish of your choice. This is not only about the visual appearance mentioned above: anti-fingerprint coatings are also possible, as well as haptic finishes with patterned rolled surfaces, and stainless steel can be coloured on request. In many cases, effect coatings are also a sensible alternative to PVD coatings.

An excerpt from the laudation reads: ‘This unique powder coating picks up on the colour tone of the striking copper roof and conveys the impression of weathered copper.’ The surface treatment in this case comes from Enviral.
